DETAILED BACKGROUND
A detailed overview of my academic, operational, and institutional experience in fisheries, policy, and international collaboration.
OVERVIEW
Gwendal Le Fol is a specialized fisheries translator and consultant, founder of Ocean Environment, a San Diego-based certified small business supporting fisheries managers, policy makers, and researchers worldwide.
His work focuses on high-stakes multilingual communication across fisheries policy, scientific research, and regulatory compliance. He translates complex technical and institutional content, including operational reports, training manuals, certification standards, and policy frameworks.
Gwendal holds a Masters (MAS) in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (2016) from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, a Masters (MSc) in Coastal Management (2007) from the European Institute for Marine Studies in Brest, France, a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) in Applied Marine Sciences (2005), as well as a Bachelor (BSc) in Marine Sciences (2003) from Plymouth University in the UK.
FIELD & OPERATIONAL EXPERIENCE (2008–2012)
His maritime career began in 2008 as a scientific observer onboard a purse seiner targeting bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean Sea. This experience led to deployments across multiple vessels in Europe and Africa until 2012, providing him with direct operational insight into fisheries systems.
POLICY & CONSULTING EXPERIENCE (2012–2016)
He then joined a fisheries consultancy in Paris, France, as a bilingual Projects Officer. In this role, he contributed to the coordination of the ICCAT Bluefin Tuna Regional Observer Program (BFT-ROP) and supported the evaluation of Protocols to the Fisheries Partnership Agreements with countries outside the EU.
Additionally, he contributed to fisheries development projects across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.
In 2013, Gwendal established his freelance business in Paris, providing specialized translation services to a valued network of consultants, consulting firms, RFMOs, NGOs, and private-sector clients. He continued to expand his expertise, receiving Sustainable Eel Standard assessor training in 2015 and contributing to the coordination of the ICCAT Bluefin Tuna Regional Observer Program through 2016.
INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & TECHNICAL WORK (2016–2023)
In pursuit of further knowledge and international collaboration, Gwendal moved to San Diego, California, in 2015, where he earned a Master’s degree in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). He also obtained certifications as a Scientific Scuba Diver accredited by AAUS, NAUI, and SIO.
In 2016, he established his freelance business in San Diego, engaging in research and translation projects, contributing to peer-reviewed publications, and collaborating with international organizations.
In 2017, he worked with the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (NOAA) on a study examining the impacts of climate change on U.S. West Coast fishing communities. He also worked as a freelance translator in the oil & gas sector for AES Marine Consultants and was placed on the consultant roster to participate in evaluations of Fisheries Partnership Agreements with countries outside the EU.
Between 2017 and 2019, in parallel with his research and translation activities, Gwendal worked at Daybreak Game Company as a Localization Specialist, gaining valuable experience in translation, localization workflows, project management, IT environments, and quality assurance.
Between 2020 and 2022, Gwendal was contracted by the University of California, Santa Cruz, joining the Future Seas research group. His work focused on socio-economic considerations related to swordfish, albacore tuna, and Pacific sardine fisheries in the context of climate change. He co-authored two peer-reviewed publications:
• Projecting climate change impacts from physics to fisheries: A view from three California Current fisheries (link)
• Changes to the structure and function of an albacore fishery reveal shifting social-ecological realities for Pacific Northwest fishermen (link)
Between 2021 and 2023, Gwendal was contracted by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. He also served as a chair-appointed member of the Working Group on Social Indicators (WGSOCIAL) of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), contributing to a scoping review on the use of socio-economic indicators to monitor and report progress toward fisheries sustainability.
Between 2022 and 2023, he also worked as a Translator and Biology Content Creator with StudySmarter, a German e-learning startup.
CURRENT FOCUS
Since then and into 2026, Gwendal has focused on developing Ocean Environment as a specialized, high-level translation and consulting practice in fisheries and marine resource management. His work emphasizes technical accuracy, consistency, and long-term client collaboration.
He continues to expand his expertise and has embarked on a long-term effort to develop professional proficiency in Spanish.
Throughout his career, Gwendal has remained committed to delivering precise, reliable, and context-aware translations that support decision-making, compliance, and international cooperation in the fisheries sector.
